Keystone Mercy Helps 700 Limited-Mobility Children and Their Families Enjoy the Philadelphia Zoo

First-Ever Family Fun Day at the Zoo Brings Combines Fun and Health

October 13, 2008
Philadelphia, PA
–Keystone Mercy Health Plan, the largest medical assistance managed care organization in Pennsylvania, hosted a Family Fun Day at the Philadelphia Zoo for its young, limited-mobility members and their families. More than 700 attendees took part in the event on Sunday, Oct. 12.

Many of the children attending the event required the use of a wheel chair or walking apparatus, with the scope of their special needs ranging from requiring assistance with walking, to very limited mobility and no speech.

Keystone Mercy provided travel arrangements or SEPTA tokens for many of the families in attendance. The children and their families received free admission to the zoo and entertainment by “Zoo on Wheels,” plus important lead screenings for children under 3 years old and dental hygiene screenings for all children. Twenty-nine children under 3 years old received a free lead screening and more than 140 children received the free dental hygiene screening.

Sixty-five Keystone Mercy volunteers, plus Philadelphia Zoo staff and others helped make the day a success.
